KRISTIN ANCHORS

  • Kristin Anchors is a visual artist and emergency medicine doctor based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her current studio practice includes dissecting the textbooks she accumulated in training to develop hand cut collages which aim to heal the fractured relationship between body and mind, human and the more-than-human world.

Her mature sense of wonder manifests in every piece, which are both playful and meaningful. With keen attention to detail she seamlessly weaves found imagery to tell stories informed by her unique and uninhibited access to life and death.

Anchors has had a life-long creative practice without formal training in Art. She studied Life Sciences and Philosophy at Arizona State University prior to completing medical school at the University of Arizona. She received specialty training in Emergency Medicine at the University of New Mexico Hospital.

Her work has been featured in galleries and institutions including the Mayo Clinic Center for Humanities in Medicine in Arizona and the Harwood Center for the Arts in Albuquerque; it has been widely published in journals such as For the Wild.

  • Mammalian and plant bodies are intricately woven together, echoing one another in ways both literal and lyrical. This collection of hand-cut collages delves into the shared patterns between tree and human anatomy, illuminating the profound, symbiotic relationships that animate us.

The "Tree of Life" collages emphasize themes of resilience, balance, and eternal cycles of life. Through visual harmonies, they reveal unexpected connections — like those between the gut and brain, root and crown — creating a dialogue between the seen and the unseen.

In the “Eruption” series, the continuity of human and plant worlds is explored with a focus on emergence. These works, imbued with the freshness of spring, capture the vitality of life’s awakening. Biological forms — breast, testicle, taste buds — interlace with vibrant flora, buzzing bees, and elemental forces, expressing the innate courage to be seen.

Drawing from Greek mythology, “Daphne’s Liberty” and “Seen,” depict the theme of human transformation. In "Daphne's Liberty," the nymph Daphne, pursued by lustful Apollo, escapes his grasp by transfiguring into a laurel tree. And "Seen" tells the story of Narcissus, who, so captivated by his own reflection that he was blind to the admiration of others, is turned into a flower upon his death.
