A story about pattern seeking. Featuring new work by weaver, Emelie Richardson. This show is an exploration of the instinctual and habitual nature of repetition and pattern. In these handwoven paintings, repetitive movements slowly translate into replicating line then form. Patterns repeat but are never identically reproduced, mimicking nature’s cyclical yet unpredictable behaviors. Through repetition there is a letting go, a getting lost, a meandering off path. Contours begin to blur; soft fascination prevails.
Emelie Richardson’s handwoven works blur the boundaries of traditional craft and painting. In Emelie’s handwoven paintings, chance and improvisation have become integral elements to the laborious process of weaving, in which fluid line and form cannot be easily controlled. Allowing the materials to play a large role in informing the work, Emelie highlights spontaneous subtle shifts in surface texture and tonality. Emelie currently lives and works in Chimayo, New Mexico.
